A new dog collar employing GPS technology allows owners to find lost dogs using their smart phones. Named the GEODOG, the system comes with software that can be installed on a phone or computer. When a dog goes astray, owners call the GEODOG number and soon after receive a text message containing the GPS coordinates of the dog as well as a link to a map displaying its whereabouts.
In addition to the location tracker, the GEODOG system has other features as well. One, presumably an alternative to the electric fence, allows owners to establish a “zone.” If their pets venture outside the defined zone, they’ll receive a message.
According to Bryan Clark of gizmag, who tested an earlier model of a GPS collar, the GEODOG seems to be superior because it’s “much slipper in profile, and doesn’t require [a] bulky control center or…exposed antenna.” Earlier versions were too big, which could lead to safety risks, Clark explains. But the GEODOG is about the size of a normal dog collar, and weighs just over five ounces.
