Facebook Messenger Puts A Limit To The Number of Threads For Forwarding A Message; Aims To Stop Misinformation Regarding Coronavirus

As the coronavirus outbreak has caused numerous amount of challenges for the technology-oriented companies around the globe, the situation hasn’t been any different for Facebook as well.

The social media giant is facing its biggest battle of fighting against misinformation that is being spread rapidly across the platform on an everyday basis. But the steps that the company is taking rapidly to prevent unnecessary panic might soon get them their reputation back in the eyes of people.

According to the recent developments, as caught by the famous reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, Facebook has tweaked its Messenger app by limiting the number of people you can forward a message to at a single time. This is done specifically to add frictions in the way users around the globe are spreading misinformation almost every other hour.

In a GIF shared by Jane, one can see the user trying to send a “test message” to a number of threads but as soon as she ticks of five people in her friend list, Facebook warns about the limit with a pop-up notification. Hence, that means even if a user wants to send a piece of misinformation to others, Facebook won’t allow him to forward it to more than 5 friends or groups now.

Facebook has adopted this approach from Whatsapp as they first tried the technique of limiting the number of people you can forward a message to in everyone’s top favorite chatting app and eventually the experiment also resulted into a significant decline in misinformation being spread.

Coronavirus has put the health of millions around the world at risk and with that, the markets are also on their knees. This is the time when the world needs Facebook’s help and fortunately, the company is constantly delivering whatever is possible by collaborating with governments, emergency response organizations and small businesses, along with easing up the pressure for its employees and users as well.

While misinformation creates panic which can be more dangerous than the coronavirus itself for so many populations, let’s hope Facebook’s attempt to put a break to all the wrong messages work!

Facebook taking pro-active measures: Making amends while lending a helping hand in times of crisis

  • Facebook has been taking prompt actions in response to the global crisis of coronavirus pandemic.
  • The company is trying hard to regain public trust, and the measures it is taking are the need of the hour.

With the world crumbling apart, the economy crashing down, millions of people getting sick daily and many succumbing to the disease - hypothetically speaking, the world seems to be going through a major apocalypse! Coronavirus pandemic has hit the planet hard, and every individual is facing the brunt of the extremely distressing situation.

In current times, the powerful role of social media platforms cannot be negated. People are in a lockdown situation. When the coronavirus outbreaks began in January, people started posting all sorts of mythical and falsified information about the disease and social networks like Facebook did not pay much attention to all that initially. This led them to gain mass dis-trust and severe criticism from everywhere.

But this was not the first time. Facebook has been going through a challenging period since the 2016 U.S. election. The company came under massive criticism in not controlling misinformation and propaganda ahead of the election. This resulted in the company to come under blasting radars and get branded for its other numerous scandals.

Facebook failed to learn its lesson and then in March 2018, the company’s reputation got severely affected by the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a political firm managed to get access to the data of millions of Facebook users and used it illegally to target ads for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. Facebook had to face a whopping $5 billion fine from the Federal Trade Commission.

After these serious failures to protect public data and for its lenient policies, the company faced another blow in 2019 when four separate antitrust investigations launched against it.

However, after going through all this, Facebook seems to have learned its lesson the hard way. To rebuild public trust and as a goodwill gesture, Facebook has taken swift and highly effective actions since February 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic.

Along with other tech firms, Facebook made serious efforts to do content policing, fact-checking of ads, blocking the “overnight sellers” from taking advantage of people’s fears!

Facebook has been showing keen interest in trying to help governments, small businesses, emergency response organizations and its employees in this time of mass distress and chaos.

Recently, the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said that they want to make sure that they do whatever it takes to help support the public health response. He also praised and personally thanked the people who are doing everything to help the world in this crisis.

Facebook lent its Menlo Park headquarters to World Health Organization, leaders from Amazon, Google, Salesforce and other tech firms to come together and discuss the measures these companies can take to provide solutions for the coronavirus pandemic.

Some of the steps that Facebook has taken in this regard are making sure that everyone has accurate information, and this feat has been carried out through the launch of Coronavirus Information Center on Facebook, directing and connecting people towards accurate information sources, supporting health authorities in the provision of credible information, prompting Instagram to connect people with helpful information, fact-checking and monitoring the content being shared, getting expert health tips from Dr. Fauci, supporting the collaboration of WHO with WhatsApp, banning ads for face masks, hand sanitizers and other stuff that can potentially lead already distressed people to get scammed.

Apart from these efforts, Facebook is supporting global health organizations by allocating $20 million in donations to support COVID-19 relief efforts, and through free ads and a lot more.

It’s not only trying to help the general masses, but it’s also empowering its partners with data and tools. The company has given a $1,000 bonus to 45000 full-time employees to help them with their finances during their work-from-home setup.

Each employee will be able to receive more than their full bonus for the six months because the company has decided to give every employee exceeds expectations performance ratings for half of the year 2020.

The company is also lending support to communities and offering free workplace for companies in need. Facebook has announced a $100 million program to help small businesses that have been hit hard by the pandemic.

Despite doing so much for the people, Facebook itself has seen a downhill road due to this global crisis. Its shares are also going down this year. However, Facebook coming forward with responsible actions for the world has somewhat earned it forgiveness for its past missteps and maybe now it's on the way to mend its reputation in the eyes of the world.

Mobile Gaming Leaving Behind Computers and Consoles

In 2019, mobile gaming outpaced all forms of gaming - whether the competition was with consoles or PC/MAC gaming. The total spend turned out to be 2.4x more than PC/MAC gaming and 2.9x more than that of home consoles. Besides that, we also saw franchises like Call of Duty and Mario Kart tour shifting to the mobile platform because they knew that mobile was about to democratize gaming and give anyone the opportunity to enjoy their favorite games with heavy graphics on mobile anytime, anywhere.

But that was still just a start!

Expansion of Market Will Only Benefit Publishers More

However, when it came to the matter of consumer spend (as highlighted in chart below), core games dominated the category with 76% consumer spends. Much of the credit for this success goes to the nature of core games as gamers get engaged in all sorts of customization, competitive online play and even season pass memberships.

The total spend overall doesn’t belong to the big publishers only anymore. There are emerging players who have also crossed $5 million annual consumer spend with amazing games. Moreover, the total number of games crossing $100 million annual consumer spend also experienced a 29% growth in 2019 when compared with 2017- where it all began.

Moving Forward...

As the prediction regarding mobile gaming surpassing $100 million in consumer spend goes on, this mark can be achieved with following the trends with great precision and more engaging games. The publishers have started off well with their research and will continue to inspire the emerging companies to create great games with a massive mobile gaming market out there, a lot still is left to be done in order to astonish the world with the potential that mobile gaming holds.

Research Proves Why YouTubers Watch What They Watch In A Day

We have reached that point in time where almost all of us cannot imagine our days without YouTube. While the largest video-sharing platform has really brought the world together, the company recently carried out an interesting study regarding why YouTubers watch what they have watched in the past 24 hours.

YouTube began by asking the similar question from around 12,000 people that fell in between the age group of 13-64 and then shared the results via Think With Google.

First of all, the respondents watched a variety of content that ranged well from traditional media to videos only available online. Then they gave multiple reasons behind selecting a certain video from a list of 20 and that includes how one video helped people to relax and unwind, taught something new, allowed them to dig deeper into their interests; made one laugh or even because they had a passion related to the video.

YouTube's study stated that almost 70% of the global viewers let their moods make the choice of content and this further indicates how videos play a very personal role in our lives now. So, as soon as our mood changes, the choice of videos that we watch on internet also changes.

Be it learning new skills or seeking for advice, people around the globe now watch videos for more than merely entertainment. While many now learn life through it, some were also adamant to accept that they don’t know how they would get through life without watching videos every day.

Some other findings by YouTube include:
  • Viewers like content that specifically relate to their personal interests and passions more.
  • The ability of content to make people dig deep for exploring their interests stands of as much importance as high production quality, being on a preferred network/platform or even starring famous actors.
  • The Traditional TV-era makers now remain of less importance to the viewers.
  • Younger generations like Millennials and Gen-Zers search for more short-form content in the names of webisodes, tutorials or short video clips made by professionals.
Of all the video streaming services used worldwide, YouTube was by far the most common.

All in all, YouTube is here with a proof that with so many choices in content, people now watch videos with a different approach. They are now liberated to choose what really matters to them on a personal level.

But What Does This All Mean For Marketers?

Aim To Become Relatable:
It’s time to relate to your audience, all with the help of knowing their personal interests. However, bear in mind that the interest should not be your own expectations or guesses, you will have to follow the behavior. For instance, if your target is people who are looking for self-improvement, don’t keep your research restricted to your own alone self.

Go Beyond Entertainment:
46% of global viewers have admitted that they watch new videos to learn something new from them. Fortunately enough, videos have emerged from an awareness-only medium to an engaging one and the ad strategies should incorporate the changes.

Prefer Passion over Production:
When it came to choosing what to watch, respondents chose passion 1.6 times more than production quality. This overall means that people care more about what the content speaks to them instead of looking all fancy and premium.

A New Google Messages Update Comes With An Image Editing Feature

Google is making efforts to offer a better messaging experience for Android users by adding more features to Google Messages. It seems like Google has decided to develop its SMS app at full steam. It might be possible that the Google Messages app becomes a possible Facebook or Whatsapp messenger substitute for many people. In its efforts to bring the app to a new level, Google Messages has now finally launched an image markup tool in its latest beta update.

The folks at Android Police first spotted the new image editing tool in Google Messages version 5.9. To use the tool, you need to attach an image to a text and tap on the image before sending it. A preview of the image will be opened you will see an option to edit the image in the top right corner. You can add texts and overlays to any image with the help of this tool. A pencil, a sharpie, and a transparent highlighter are available in 9 colors. These 9 colors will ensure that you are having enough contrast to make your texts pop on your images. The font of the text added to images can’t be changed but there is an option to change the color. After you are done typing the text, you can move your words freely around the photo by holding on the words and place it anywhere on the image. You can also open an already sent image in a chat and edit it. After editing, you can send the image back or save the edited image directly to your phone.

Although, I feel that not everyone will probably need this tool but I am sure that this will come in handy from time to time. This tool is similar to the tools added to Duo and Images by Google recently. Facebook and Whatsapp messenger also incorporates these type of features.

You can get Google Messages having the new image markup tool from the Play Store by signing up for the public beta. This feature is still a bit unstable. So, don’t be surprised if the new feature crashes as there is a reason it’s still in beta.

Fighting Fake News: WhatsApp introduces a search feature to let users Google the content of forwarded messages

In the days of the pandemic coronavirus, WhatsApp is testing a feature that would provide ground to their 2 billion users to verify the information they received.

Facebook owned application has been testing this feature since last year to make the platform more authentic and reliable. WhatsApp informed media outlets that the feature will be rolled out soon to empower all users. By leveraging this feature users could quickly search the body of forwarded messages in Google, this will help them check whether the information is fake or correct. This feature is currently available to only Whatsapp beta testers.

Currently, Whatsapp is being used to inform and circulate the content about coronavirus crisis.

Therefore, WhatsApp approached government of different countries last month to use its platform to inform the public.

Recently, World Health Organization has joined WhatsApp to provide authentic information about the virus to masses. The WhatsApp stated that it is the official NGO to use messaging app to spread awareness. The app further stated that Singaporean government, Health department of South Africa, Health Ministry of Israel and Indonesia's KOMFINO also joined the application to inform their citizens as fast as possible.

Moreover, India Health Department has used the services of the social media to spread awareness in the country to halt the spread of the virus.

However, the application has been trying since 2019 to fight against misinformation.

WhatsApp is now the need of the world. Therefore, it is important to introduce the important fact-checking features as soon as possible otherwise people would be misinformed which could cost the lives of humans or would result in snatching away of their right to know the truth. WhatsApp is the most used messaging app around the world. Therefore, it is important for this platform to be authentic and true information provider.

Unsure whether the message your received is factually correct or fake? Thankfully, Whatsapp is here to help. A new feature will let you search the content of forwarded messages in Google search to help you further distilled down your research.

Instagram Rolls Out 'Stay Home' Sticker To Promote Social Distancing

  • Instagram introduces a new ‘stay home’ sticker and story to encourage social distancing among the masses.
  • The curated story appears on top of all of the friends’ posts.
  • Other social media companies applying changes in reaction to the coronavirus crisis in their own unique ways.

The WHO advises the people to stay home to slow down the spread of the coronavirus. The virus still does not have any cure but there is a chance to slow down its spread by maintaining a distance of 1-2 meters apart among the people. So, to encourage social distancing, Instagram launched a new ‘stay home’ sticker in stories. We can’t say how effective these cause-related stickers are but Instagram keeps on releasing them that shows they are somewhat effective. In ordinary circumstances, Instagram stories are filled with snaps from festivals, parties, and social gatherings, etc. But the circumstances are not the same now, so people need to stay home to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. This sticker might make staying home more fun.

The new sticker appears to have a more strong emphasis from the platform as the stories with this sticker will appear on top of other friend’s posts. Instagram also created a new group story that will gather stories tagged with the new ‘stay home’ sticker. It appears that for now you will only be able to see posts from your friends in the group story.

Anything that can help spread awareness among the masses is important because people are not taking this issue seriously, said Paul, founder of Likemind Media and was among the first creators to use the new ‘stay home’ sticker.

The coronavirus death toll continues to rise up day-by-day, but some people are still not taking the situation seriously and continue to go out in public gatherings. You can still be carrying the virus even if you don’t show any symptoms, so it will be better to avoid going out and attending public gatherings. It’s good to see that Instagram is at least trying to highlight the key message and is encouraging social distancing.

Other social media platforms such as Facebook, Google, YouTube, Twitter and Whatsapp are also applying reactive changes to the coronavirus pandemic in their own unique ways. Whatsapp launched a chatbot in partnership with the World Health Organization to fight COVID-19 misinformation. The new chatbot will provide the latest information about the coronavirus and will also dispel fake news about the coronavirus and its spread. To use the chatbot, just simply add ‘+41 79 893 1892’ to your phone texts and send ‘Hi’ in a Whatsapp message. Facebook on the other hand has added a COVID-19 information page at top of the user’s newsfeed.

Working from Home Because of Coronavirus? Effective Technology Makes It Easier

When you’ve never worked from home before, it can be a significant change from how you’ve worked before. It’s certainly true that some employers – maybe the majority – will provide the necessary equipment and/or software to facilitate this mass movement to temporary home working due to the Coronavirus. It may not be the best choice, and remote workers always have the option to pick other, better alternatives. Some of these are free or offer free 30-day trials. However, for people remunerated based on their productivity level or who must maintain a certain level to stay gainfully employed, the best tools may be required.

Here are some technology-related ideas worth considering.

Private VPN to Make Remote Connections More Secure

A private virtual private network (VPN) acts to provide end-to-end encryption to all communications on a PC. For companies that are letting some staff log into their corporate network from outside the office building, using a VPN ensures that the login process is safer, and the information obtained during the connection is securely sent and received.

Using a VPN goes beyond what SSL provides through secure web pages by adding different layers of encryption. There are many different VPN providers, so it’s difficult to know which one to choose. To help you, here is a privateVPN review to look over.

Communicating with the Team Remotely

Many companies aren’t set up for real-time communications via chat apps yet. The belief was often that it would lead to wasted time that could be better spent elsewhere. However, remote workers have known for years that being able to quickly touch base with a colleague in real-time is better than composing a full email and needing to stop and wait for the reply before continuing.

For remote working, communication/collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams, Skype or Slack all have their place. If your company has already selected or used one platform, then stick with that. However, if they haven’t, and you’re used to using a certain app, then recommend it to the remote integration team.

Group Task Management

Task and project management for departments is critical to ensure companies can meet their objectives. With this level of organization, it’s much harder to manage workflows using other methods like email or a general noticeboard system.

At the most basic end, it’s possible to use free Google Sheets to set up a single Excel-compatible spreadsheet or Word document. From there, managers can provide a list of tasks and group them by the person or team responsible for their completion. Deadlines and other information can also be included, edited in real-time, and viewed by other staff members virtually instantly.

There are some task management tools like Microsoft To-Do app that allow for individual tasks to be assigned to different people. Projects can also be created by setting up a task and then adding steps to its ultimate completion.

Also, advanced tools like Asana or Microsoft Project allow for a granular level of detail on projects, tasks, and assignment decision management.

Clean Up the PC for Faster Running

If you’ll be using a personal laptop as your workhorse at home, then you have greater freedom of what software to add.

When the PC isn’t that new, then it may have slowed down considerably. It’s a good idea to use a utility that can clean up the system, delete unnecessary registry entries, and defragment the hard drive. This will lead to a smoother running and faster booting system.

For the PC, you might wish to try Advanced SystemCare from IObit. With a Mac, CleanMyMac X or MacBooster 7 both have some good features. Don’t forget a solid antivirus and antimalware package too.

Android App Platform Safer to Install New Apps

Google has confirmed that the app protection program, Play Protect, is now to become a default feature of the Play Store.

For Android users, this ensures that apps are safer to install. iOS has similar app monitoring systems to catch malicious code inside mobile apps.

Blocking Tools to Stay Focused

The number of distractions when trying to work at home is considerable. Whether it’s the kids being home from school, the dog wanting to play, or the nearby TV begging for attention is immaterial. It is usually much harder to get things done at home than people imagine, especially when they have never had to deal with that aspect before.

Using browser extensions, add-ons or installed software that actively block access to chosen websites that you can waste hours on is the answer. Tools like StayFocusd, Net Nanny, Barracuda Web Blocker, and K9 Web Protection are all solid options here.

Once you have the right technology at your disposal, it becomes infinitely easier to get important work done from home. Without them, you’ll be struggling until the Coronavirus is a thing of the past.

How Safe Are Google's Android Auto and Apple's Car Play?

The world has shifted to the applications and digital tools. However, not all of them are good to use and beneficial. Some of them are dangerous because of being a source of distraction. And unfortunately, two of them are Google's Android Auto and Apple's Car Play.

The two software are used for navigation and driving purposes but a study from I AM RoadSmart and TRL reveals that Android Auto and Car Play can distract drivers. The report says that drivers delay around a second when they don’t use these infotainment devices but the users of these touch systems can have 57% and 53% of increase in reaction time, when playing music through Spotify using the Car Play and Android Auto, respectively. Besides, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that users take off their eyes from the roads more than the given guidelines due to which the position and speed of the car suffered significantly.

The applications are considered to distract more than texting and driving after having cannabis. The report highlighted that the voice commands are not as effective as touch of Android Auto and Car Play but the touch screen divert attention more than other activities.

Therefore, I AM RoadSmart asked the drivers and chauffeurs to operate the applications or set them before starting their journey. Besides, they guided them to use Auto Car after parking the car in the corner of the road to get guidelines. However, they ask authorities to review them further.

The chart below lists the activities that effect the driver's reaction more. According to the research, drinking could slow the reaction by 12 percent while cannabis and hands-free phone by 21 and 27 percent. The graphic shows that drivers would react 30, 35 and 36 percent slowly if they use voice command of Android Auto, do texting and use voice commands of Apple CarPlay respectively. Meanwhile Hand-held phone and touch functions of Android Auto and CarPlay could slow the reaction time by 46, 53 and 57 percent.

Although, authorities are against the two, the users find info and entertainment boxes very helpful and effective. According to their reviews, the application assist them to reach at place on time and help them to focus more on roads with their voice commands.

How safe are in-vehicle infotainment systems?

Combating Burnout In The Workplace (infographic)

Burnout is a serious problem that is receiving more attention than ever. When you experience stress, there are two ways to handle it. Either you deal with and release that stress or you hold on to it and it builds up. When a person experiences chronic stress, eventually their stress levels overload and can lead to burnout. In the United States, 51% of workers say they have felt burned out more than once, and 77% of professionals and 84% of Millennials have experienced burnout at some point in their careers. What is burnout and how can we address the burnout epidemic that is sweeping the nation?

Burnout Culture In The U.S. Workplace

64% of American workers say they feel stressed or frustrated at work at least once a week, but this doesn’t mean every one of them is suffering from burnout. In order for normal, day-to-day stress to turn into burnout it would need to build over time. If you experience normal daily stressors like deadlines and failures, chances are you are going to move forward from them relatively easily. But when you start to experience the same frustrations on a regular basis, it becomes harder to move on from them. When stress starts to build it leads to burnout.

During times of stress, your body’s cortisol levels can increase two to five times. When these cortisol levels are sustained for a long period of time it can increase your blood pressure and A1C levels as well as lower your immunity. Over time this can lead to hypertension, type II diabetes, heart disease, depression, and more. There is a real and physical consequence to burnout and prolonged stress, so fighting your stress is crucial for your long-term health and well-being.

Avoiding Chronic Stress And Burnout

In order to effectively deal with stress, it’s important to understand the root of the stress. Identifying stressors can help you put in place ways to deal with it so it doesn’t build up. If you are stressed about too many deadlines, you can ask for accommodations at work to help you better manage them. If you are stressed about interacting with a particular client, you can ask to be reassigned.

If your source of stress is something that is unavoidable in your daily work activities, it is still possible to manage that stress. Start by establishing a routine. Controlling some of the unknowns in your schedule can help you feel better predictability in your day-to-day routine. Prioritize your day so that you are completing the most important tasks first and leaving the least important tasks until last so that if things carry over it’s not something that is going to stress you out.

When you are home from work, ensure you are following a routine, getting enough sleep, exercising, and eating right. Socialize with friends and family, meditate, and know when it’s time to seek out professional help in the form of therapy, yoga, or even medical intervention.

Not getting enough sleep can lead to burnout and burnout can lead to a decreased ability to sleep. Maintaining a routine with good sleep hygiene, including turning off screens at least an hour before bedtime, can go a long way. Physical activity can also help you burn off your excess cortisol levels. After all, they are an artifact from when fight or flight kept humans alive on a daily basis, so it makes sense that exercise can help.

Learn more about burnout and chronic stress as well as how to keep it at bay from the infographic below. Are you ready to learn how to combat burnout in the workplace?

This infographic outlines the science behind burnout and chronic stress as well as how to handle it.

See how long it takes the world’s highest paid YouTubers to earn your annual salary

The top 10 highest earners on YouTube took home a combined $162 million last year alone. It is tricky to fully comprehend just how profitable what in many cases started out as a hobby or side hustle for some of these influencers turned into. So, the team at Sportarly crunched the data and built a cool new tool which tells you exactly how long it would take the world’s highest paid YouTube stars to earn your annual salary. You can try it out here.

Due to the social distancing measures recommended (or in some cases imposed) by governments all over the world, many of us have found ourselves working remotely for the foreseeable future. Many of us will also be looking for ways to generate some extra income with all the free time we now have. If you find yourself doing the same, you should seriously consider creating and monetizing a YouTube channel. We have broken down some the numbers below to help keep you motivated.

Interesting Facts: It would take Ryan Kaji, the 8 year old toy reviewer, less than 1 day (just 21 hours and 18 minutes) to earn the 2019 median US salary of $63,179. Dude Perfect, the second highest paid YouTuber of 2019, could earn most Americans yearly wage in just 1 day and 4 hours. Third on the list was 6 year old Anastasia Radzinskaya who earned approximately $49,300 each day in 2019. It would take VanossGaming, who came bottom of the list of highest earners, just 2 days to earn the median household income. Below we have included some more depressing numbers to keep in mind the next time you are considering starting a YouTube channel. If you earn $193,415, the median base salary of physicians (the highest paid job of 2019 according to Glassdoor), it would take: Ryan Kaji just 2 days and 16 hours to earn your salary. The Dude Perfect crew just 3 days and 12 hours to earn your salary. Anastasia Radzinskaya 3 days and 21 hours to earn your salary. If you earned a modest $58,030, the median salary of teachers in the US according to Investopedia, it would take: Ryan Kaji 19 hours and 36 minutes to earn your salary. The Dude Perfect crew 1 day and 2 hours to earn your salary. Anastasia Radzinskaya 1 day and 4 hours to earn your salary.

Ryan Kaji

8-year-old toy reviewer Ryan Kaji earned an incredible $26 million in 2019 through his incredibly popular YouTube channel, Ryan's World (previously Ryan ToysReview).

After asking his mum why he wasn’t on YouTube, the family set about creating and uploading the review videos in March 2015. Several years and many videos later, Kaji has over 24.4 million subscribers.

With an impressive $26 million pocketed in 2019, it would take him just 21 hours and 18 minutes to earn the median US household income ($63,179).

To understand just how much Kaji is earning from his videos, the Sportarly team compared his earnings to that of the highest paid profession, physicians (according to a Glassdoor study). The median income for a US physician is $193,415 and Kaji would earn this in just 2 days and 16 hours. It would take him just 19 hours and 36 minutes to earn the median salary of a US teacher (the lowest paid profession according to the study), $58,030.

In 2019, he earned:

All of this means they have been able to generate a sizeable income from their online fame. At $20 million last year, they only needed to work 1 day and 4 hours to make the median US salary.

It would take them just 3 days and 12 hours to earn the physician’s salary and only 1 day and 2 hours to earn the same amount as the average teacher.

In 2019, they earned:
  • $1.7 million per month.
  • $384.6K per week.

People must be loving them after Anastasia’s online presence helped her and her family earn $18 million in 2019. Closely following the Dude Perfect team, she also earns the median US salary in 1 day and 7 hours.
At just 6 years old, Anastasia is already earning considerably more than 99% of adults each and every year. Compared to the physician, she would have to work just 3 days and 21 hours to earn the same amount. It would take her just 1 day and 4 hours to out-earn the standard US teacher.

In 2019, she earned:
  • $18 million per year.
  • $1.5 million per month.
  • $346.2K per week.
  • $49.3K per day.
  • $2.1K per hour.
  • $34.25 per minute.
  • $0.57 per second.

Rhett and Link

American comedy duo and childhood friends Rhett and Link turned the comedy style they had developed over the years into a profitable venture when they started posting their content on YouTube. The creative approach these two take pays off and they took home roughly $17.5 million last year. Time to earn the median US income, just 1 day and 7 hours.

Jeffree Star

Jeffree Star is a man of many talents and he has made use of many of them to develop his YouTube following. With an army of 17.6 million followers and over 2 billion video views, anyone with skills surrounding makeup, modelling, singing and/or song writing should seriously consider following suit and setting up a channel of their own. His online success helped him generate $17 million in 2019. It would take him less than 2 days (1 day and 9 hours) to earn the median US income.

Preston

Preston has made a fortune out of his love of video games. His video blogging (and the 12.1 million subscribers it reaches) meant he generated a whopping $14 million last year alone. Earning the equivalent of $26.64 each and every minute, it would take him just 1 day and 14 hours to make the median US household income.

PewDiePie

PewDiePie is a Swedish YouTuber and is another one making a killing off his passion for video games. After starting his video creation career back in 2010, he has gone on to earn himself 103 million subscribers and $13 million in 2019. Broken down, in 2019 he earned:

  • $250K per week.
  • $35.6K per day.
  • $1.5K per hour.
  • $24.73 per minute.
  • $0.41 per second.
He would compete with those earning the median US income in just 1 day and 19 hours.

DanTDM

Daniel Robert Middleton (DanTDM) is yet another influencer who has made a career out of content creation surrounding video games. Since his start on YouTube in 2009, he has learnt a lot and earned a substantial loyal following. Currently sitting at 22.5 million subscribers and over 16 billion video views, he is entertaining an army of fans with his content. His videos helped him earn $12 million last year, making the median US income in just 1 day and 21 hours.

VanossGaming

The research does seem to suggest that video game playing might be one of the most profitable hobbies to use to start generating extra income online. Last on the Forbes list of the highest YouTube earners is VanossGaming. Real name Evan Fong, he began uploading videos in 2011. His consistent efforts have paid off big with earnings of $11.5 million in 2019. He would earn the median US income in a solid 2 days.

If you are considering starting a YouTube channel yourself, you might want to consider toy reviews or something related to video games. Most of those featured needed a few years to build up their followings to the point where they could earn so much and no doubt a lot of work went into this behind the scenes. Still, it just goes to show the potential a passionate side hustle has and the vast sums it could eventually generate.

A quick view at Facebook’s Internal Facial Recognition App

Facebook has created an internal facial recognition app that allows users to scan people’s faces and identify them.

The news regarding the app’s existence came in November 2019. However, the app was designed somewhere in 2015 and is accessible to the company’s employees. Now, Vice found some more details regarding the working mechanism of the app.

The app works in a basic manner: when a user points at a person, the AR technology scans its database and presents a pop-up over the person’s face saying, ‘You are friends’. On the other hand, the people who are indistinguishable are marked as ‘unable to recognize.’

When contacted, the company’s spokesperson said that they periodically build apps to use internally. The facial recognition app is also developed for the same purpose and is only in use by Facebook’s employees and their friends who have facial recognition enabled.

The company also states that the aim of the app is to test out technologies internally and Facebook has no plans of releasing it for the public.

New Year, New Fears: 4 Biggest Cybersecurity Threats for 2020

Technology may advance from year to year, but one thing that never changes is the number of people trying to take advantage of it for their own gain. This year's crop of cyber threats features some old friends, new acquaintances, and new twists on old exploits.

How bad is 2020 looking for cyber crime so far? Read on to find out.

Cybersecurity Stats

One of the most valuable assets we hold these days is information. Despite our knowledge of cyber crime, an appalling number of individuals and businesses aren't doing enough to protect themselves and their data. Last year alone, more than half of all companies surveyed reported finding sensitive files that were exposed to the entire staff.

There are three major types of cyber crime, but the percentages are far from even. According to a report released by Verizon, a little over half of all security exploits involved hacking. The remainder are split between phishing attempts (33 percent) and malware (28 percent).

These breaches cost business owners an average of $3.92 million last year, yet more than 50 percent of North Americans don't know what to do when their information is compromised.

Cybersecurity spending is expected to reach $133.7 billion within the next two years. Your internet service provider can't do much to prevent cyber crime, so it's up to us to inform you of the cybersecurity threats we're facing and offer solutions.

Ransomware is Still Big, and Getting More Sophisticated

It seems like cyber criminals are one step ahead of security experts. As we learn more about the ways and means of their attacks, they pivot and change how they do things. This particular exploit is mainly launched against companies who collect and store high-value data like banking and health information, holding it for ransom.

Attackers are also able to remotely control computers. In a few cases, the attacker doesn't actually have the code to unlock the database and give you back your information.

We haven't yet experienced the full financial and reputation damage caused by ransomware attacks because many go unreported. Companies are even advised by security experts to just pay up. Less than 10 percent of these digital kidnappers are ever caught.

Research by digital privacy group Privacy Canada shows that using a VPN can mitigate risks of phishing sites by up to ½ while ensuring that user anonymity and privacy is protected.

In order to prevent these exploits, you should ensure that your databases are hardened at every possible point of entry, that malware is installed and updated regularly, and that all of your databases are protected. Better yet, keep any sensitive data in a separate digital storage, preferably offline, and perform regular backups.

Supply Chain Attacks are Also on the Rise

These are mostly launched against banking and other financial institutions, and they originate from malicious code inserted into the coding used to power your website. Although cryptocurrency uses blockchain technology, hackers are finding ways to penetrate it's defenses.

This means any website that collects personal or account information is a target. Be careful who you do business with online, and have a security expert perform regular pen testing to look for vulnerabilities and possible breaches. Follow cybersecurity recommendations to the letter.

Phishing, Spear Phishing, and Other Social Engineering Exploits

These exploits are similar, but not identical. However, the ways to prevent them work uniformly across the board. Social engineering is a generally targeted attack that relies on sheer numbers to make it work.

When you;re being phished, an attacker will send out bulk faked emails that contain malicious code, hoping that at least a few of the recipients will take the bait. Spear phishing is when the attack is launched against an individual or company. Usually, it is conducted by someone with general knowledge of the company and activities within the company. This information is used to trick staff into divulging passwords or providing other information that lets the attacker into their databases.

Use a reputable email provider with a solid spam detection system, don't follow links or view video that's unsolicited, and double-check anything that seems suspicious. For example, if you get an email that purports to be from a co-worker or company exec claiming they forgot their password or lost the company credit card, a quick phone call is all it will take to verify this information. Most free antivirus software will also mitigate this kind of risk and block any nefarious third party phishing sites. Antivirus programs like AVG can also detect invalid SSL certs looking to route visitors to cloaked sites.

The Rise of Deep Fakes

This may sound ominous, like something from a sci-fi novel, but the threats and implications for deep fakes are very real. In an era of fake news, the possibilities of making trouble with falsified images and video will lead to more chaos and confusion in the future.

Apps are easily available that put the ability to create fake video of world leaders or enact revenge upon individuals and further erode trust, and it could put us in physical danger. Cyber stalkers are also using a form of smartphone surveillance to spy on people and gain enough information about their activities, lives, and habits to make a convincing altered video that could be released on social media within seconds. It's also a good way to gain the information necessary to launch a convincing phishing exploit.

Always be aware of who's around when you're using your smartphone, limit access to your devices, and never follow a link or download a file unless you're 100 percent sure of its origins and content.

How to Protect Yourself From Cyber Criminals

It's estimated that more than 80 percent of companies are currently using cloud computing platforms for at least part of the business function and storage. Between this, more distributed networks, IoT, and increased reliance on smartphones and mobile devices in our everyday lives, the threats aren't going to diminish any time soon.

We're more at-risk now than ever.

So, what is a website owner to do about the problem?

First of all, set policies for company use of BYOD devices, inside and out of the office, and harden your networks. These policies should extend to use of public or unsecured networks and unapproved apps. Use common sense about opening emails that are from unknown sources or contain attachments.

Next, you'll want to segment your main network, guest networks (which you should have set up already), and IoT devices to keep them on separate networks. This allows you to contain any breaches and protect the rest of your data.

You'll also want to have a backup and restore plan in place to minimize the effects of downtime and database penetration.

Last, but certainly not least, you'll want to make sure to update your hardware, device firmware, and antivirus apps. Check your firewalls to make sure that they're properly configured and all rules and exceptions updated.

Final Thoughts

Awareness of cyber threats is only the first line of defense. You can further protect your online surfing time by using common sense and the latest antivirus/anti-spyware apps and keeping all of your devices, networks, and software updated.

Instagram Working on a Feature to Allow Setting Privacy Differently On Each Story

Instagram and its parent company Facebook have been adding a lot of handy options in their respective apps to bring the user experience to a new level, and this time again news regarding the feature that will let users hide certain stories from certain people is making rounds.

Jane Manchun Wong, an app researcher, spotted the feature and shared the screenshots on her Twitter feed. She discovered the new feature on the backend of Instagram. The screenshot shared shows that under the Stories there is a search bar that will let users select the people from whom they want to hide the story.

Currently, Instagram allows users to block people from seeing stories but that applies to all stories and none of the stories will appear to people who are not permitted. However, the new feature will let users block specific stories from people you block but can show another story simultaneously.

It is not yet confirmed whether Instagram will roll out this feature later or not.

Instagram is also testing to allow blocking or restricting all the annoying accounts from the comment section directly at once. The purpose behind it is to help in battling against cyber-bullying on the comment section of the platform.

Also, last month Wong shared about feature allowing to remove followers directly from their profile. The feature was discovered at the backend of the Android app. The feature is right now available for iOS users but the company is planning to introduce it to Android users as well.

Another feature was recently spotted by Wong in February that will let users discover the posts that they might have missed while they were away from Instagram.

Google Launches New Camera Go App For Android Go Units

  • Android Go - an altered version of Android designed for low-end smartphones.
  • Arpit Midha, a lead product manager for Android explained how Camera Go app works.
  • The first device with the new app to be shipped soon.

Google is bringing a new experience for its Android Go users by introducing the brand new Camera Go app. Basically Android Go is an altered stock version of Android designed specifically for low-end smartphones having 2GB RAM or less. Android Go has introduced two years ago and is running on 100 million active devices around the globe till now. The Go versions of many key services like Gmail and YouTube were created by Google but still a better cam app was missing up till now.

The new app comes with a simple and uncluttered interface making it easier to be used for people using Android for the first time. Google is staying loyal to its unique vision of Android Go by permitting the users not to fear about the storage issue with the new Camera Go app. The app will show you how many pictures or videos can be stored on the device and will also give suggestions to clear more space on the device. The app comes with a portrait mode. The app has been optimized in a way to be used for devices with 1 GB of RAM, and this app does not support HDR+ or night view mode. Google likely wants to keep the Night Sight feature exclusive to Pixel, so this feature to land in Camera Go app is least expected.

Arpit Midha, a lead product manager for Android at Google says that the new app is deeply built-in into the device’s working system and is not just filtering photos on prime. He also said that Portrait mode is added into the app to create a depth-of-field impact in photos so even 50 dollar units will also get this feature. Arpit Midha believes that it’s a primary one in this class of smartphones. He also states that this will standardize photography for the beginner-level.

HMD’s new Nokia 1.3 will be the first Android Go unit to be shipped which will have the new Camera Go app installed. The device will be available in April and will cost 95 euros ($102).

Twitter To Verify More Health Officials To Fight Misleading Information Regarding Coronavirus

  • Twitter is taking steps to promote accounts that are providing the correct information about the Coronavirus situation.
  • The micro-blogging platform is also trying its best to curb the COVID-19 misinformation.
  • Twitter to open up a public-facing form that will help the health officials to directly request the company for account verification.

Twitter wants to make it easier for health officials to get their accounts verified. For this purpose, the company is taking steps to open up its widely known verification program to help boost accounts that are providing correct updates about the coronavirus.

Twitter is working with public health authorities around the globe to verify health officials and was successful in verifying hundreds of accounts, the company quoted in one of its tweets.

The social media platform has been taking more aggressive steps against the spread of coronavirus misinformation. They announced to ban tweets spreading coronavirus misinformation such as false cures and other incorrect pseudo-scientific information. This effort extends to now opening of verification program which is a difficult task for the company as it tends to avoid publicly discussing verification. A lot of Twitter employees have mocking referred to their inability to verify users in their bios.

Twitter along with Facebook has verified more than 800 National Health Service accounts only in the UK. The company also explained the steps that can be taken by academic institutions and other officials who are working for public health organizations to get their accounts verified.

Twitter is verifying accounts having email addresses associated with a trusted organization or institution on prior bases. The company also instructed the health officials to refer in their bio the organization they are associated with and also make sure to include a link back to their Twitter account on the page they link to.

The company is soon going to open up a public-facing form that will help the health experts to directly request Twitter for account verification. According to Kayvon Beykpour, a product lead at Twitter, the company will share a link to an intake form for health officials to fill out for verification purposes.

It would be the first time for the company to make a publicly-accessible verification request form available after it was officially suspended in 2017 (though the company continues to verify thousands of accounts quietly).

These latest changes will only be applied to health officials distributing information regarding the coronavirus. This shows that Twitter is ready to take public input of the check-in specific conditions.

Coronavirus is Impacting the Social Media Ads We See

Coronavirus is impacting everything these days, and it turns out that even the ads we are seeing on social media are being impacted by the virus in ways that we had not really been able to predict all in all. The reason behind this is that brands are starting to become a lot more responsible in terms of the ads that they are posting, and the fact of the matter is that this is resulting in the visual landscape of social media being altered so that it is pretty much entirely centered around the outbreak of Covid-19 that the world is currently going through.

A study of the ads that are currently being posted has resulted in a lot of imagery that shows people washing their hands and the like. This is probably being done in order to encourage people to start practicing things like proper personal hygiene which at this current point in time may just be the only thing that could potentially end up preventing the virus from having too much of an impact on the world around us.

Also, an interesting thing to note is that ads focusing on human connection as well as proximity are starting to become a lot less prominent as well, and this is because of the fact that social distancing is necessary in order to prevent the spread of the virus to a large extent. Brands are probably focusing on this to make it less likely that people would think about socializing in general.
"Our computer vision AI identified that social distancing is already showing itself in imagery and video, with a 30% drop in the use of “human connection” imagery just on March 12th. Further, we identified a 12% drop in the use of “human connection” imagery between February and March (e.g. shaking hands, holding hands, hugging, kissing, etc.", explained Bridget Johnston in a blog post. Adding further, "There was an 8% drop in the use of “travel” imagery (e.g. world, flights, control towers, airports, airplanes)".
This does tell us a lot about how we often tend to live our lives and feel things based on the visual input that we are getting. Ads influence us a lot more than we realize, so it’s good that brands are taking this pandemic seriously as far as their ads are concerned.

Google Will Let Users Resize Picture-In-Picture Window With Android 11 Update

The picture-in-picture mode (PiP) came in as a flagship feature of the Oreo version of Android operating system and with it, users got the chance to enjoy playing floating videos on top of any application running on android devices.

As the feature turned out to be a great step towards making the possibility of multi-tasking on your smartphone happen with great ease, there was only one issue with it; users were still unable to resize the window as per their choices.

But now with recent developments in place, this isn’t impossible anymore. Google has set a default value in AOSP but with OEMs one can change the value which goes in relation to the size of PiP window appearing on the display. For now, users cannot change these settings on their own but it looks like that the option might come in Android 11.

The news was first confirmed by XDA Developers who have found out a new “PipResizeGestureHandler” class based in the SystemUI of Android 11 Developer Preview 2. The “PipResizeGestureHandler” class is also attached to the “com.android.systemui” instead of “com.google.android.systemui”. This means that the feature, when introduced with Android 11, will come to Google Pixel phones and all other Android devices that support Android 11 as well.

Google has plans to release the new update for Android somewhere in the later part of this year. The company even teased its users by showing some really exciting features back in February including the all new music player in the Quick Settings panel.

Google wants to make Android 11 as big as possible and therefore one can expect some necessary and some revolutionary changes to take place on your android phones soon.

Buying Fake TikTok Followers Can Be At Cost of Risking Privacy, Says Report

Every other day TikTok turns an ordinary individual into an online celebrity, while many already popular personalities also have moved to the platform to enhance their digital presence.

With the growing popularity of TikTok, many shady players have come forward to help those who are looking for instant virality. The number of vendors can be found online who are selling likes, shares, and followers at a reasonable price to boost your account engagement.

On average, 100 likes are available for US $2 only, and with a minimal amount, you can become from nobody to celebrity. However, it is not yet from where these followers come.

Recently, Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab) disclosed the unauthentic profiles and their activity on TikTok. It has not been yet confirmed whether the followers are actual people or bots. There are no display pictures or stolen photos, but only alphanumerical handles with no proper content available on accounts.

Kanishk Karan, research at DFRLab said, the pay-for-engagement industry is growing, not only for TikTok but the fake engagement is an issue faced by all leading social platforms including Facebook and Instagram.

For a long time, online social platforms have been dealing with fake engagements. The companies provide followers for TikTok as well as engagements for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Spotify, Twitch, Soundcloud and even for messaging app, Telegram.

Many social media platforms have taken action and deleted the accounts with fake followers or engagements. Like in 2019, Facebook and Instagram took a bold step by suing four Asian companies that have been selling fake accounts, followers and likes.

TikTok’s community guidelines clearly points out the inauthentic activities are against the rules of the platform. However, on this specific report, ByteDance, TikTok parent company responded neither released any statement so far.

In case, anyone is planning to get the instant TikTok followers should be aware of the fact that they are putting their privacy at risk, says the report by DFRLab. There are around 50 apps on Google Play Store that provide inauthentic engagement services including likes, followers and shares but also ask for access to several features or data on phone.

After installing such apps, they demand many permissions on an Android device. They often ask for access to the contact list of Phone and the permission to modify the content. The privacy policies of many apps are missing and even if they have, they are usually copied from other apps.

Google’s rule demands that Play Store apps and their developers should tell how they collect data and how it is used and shared. So far Google also has not commented on this particular issue.

There are many scam apps on Play Store and not all deliver as they promise. Many apps claim to offer followers in between one to seven days and during that time, they flood phones with ads. One of the apps asks to share 10 videos on TikTok before it further shares the content. Another app asked to use a certain hashtag to get the likes or another asking to watch a video to show that you are human.

Most apps that tout to increase fake engagement offer little to no results, but one thing that they do amazingly well is snoop on your data with full force and probably sell it to highest bidder.

Facebook decides to interfere with your time zone too!

The experts at Facebook have releases a time-keeping service titled the time.facebook.com. According to reports, the timekeeping software will work in a similar manner as time.google.com and time.apple.com.

Of course, there will be some modifications!

According to Facebook, inaccuracy in timekeeping can lead to a number of missed appointments and delays. However, their new public time-keeping service relies on a combination of satellite data and their own service to minimize any imprecision in time.

Facebook also highlights that in everyday circumstances like setting the oven timer – a minute difference won’t matter much. But it is an important consideration for other services that are dependent on making transactions in different data centers at the same time.

Facebook further explained that internet services are synced via a Network Time Protocol (NTP). Even our computers and mobile phones are coordinated with the NTP that syncs our clocks to UCT or Universal Coordinated Time.

But after a thorough investigation, Facebook concludes that there is some inaccuracy with the NTP. It is popular but not precise.

In order to rectify the time difference between their data servers, Facebook went ahead to make their own. According to the company, the same method is offered by Google and Apple as well. However, in the comparison - time.facebook.com is more precise by microseconds, instead of milliseconds.

The team acknowledges that it is not something life-changing but it certainly is helpful for processes that are time-stamped and any discrepancy in time could lead to potential problems.

You can also try out the new service by Facebook and coordinate your system’s time with the social media network by visiting time.facebook.com.

Google and YouTube Introduces New Resource Pages to Help Teachers and Families to Educate Students At Home

As the Coronavirus has taken over almost all over the world, the countries are shutting down. Some people are going into self-isolation while others are put into quarantine by the government and health officials. Schools, offices, universities, market places, cinemas, and other public gathering venues are being shut down to fight the highly contagious virus of Corona. Amidst this time of fear and panic; YouTube and Google have launched new resource pages which will help families in isolation and quarantine to teach their kids at home while their schools and other educational institutes remain closed.

The pages are going to effectively help teachers and students in the process of learning and educating during the crisis. The page of Google is called ‘Teach from Home’ and it offers many recommendations on how teachers can teach while staying at home with the help of Google products. The pages are simple and clean, currently, there are suggestions including how teachers can do a group video call with Google Hangouts or how online quizzes can be made by using Google Forms.

Apart from this, the ‘Teach from Home’ also has a ‘Teach from Home Toolkit’ which can help the users to personalize their experience on these pages as well as to help the users to organize their stuff into slides. The pages of ‘Teach from Home’ are currently available only in the English language.
